Gutter Options

Gutters are a trusty and necessary element for every home. Gutters are purposeful as they are tasked with keeping our homes clean, safe, and in working order. They ensure that any rain that falls against your home is directed away from your home and its foundation. This helps prevent damage to your foundation and siding. Gutters also help protect against flooding.

The type of gutters you choose and the materials with which they are manufactured can impact effectiveness and aesthetics. There are a few options you should consider before you build or remodel.

Types of Gutters

Gutters come in a variety of shapes, each having a different purpose when it comes to protecting your home. Some shapes will catch more debris than others, and if you live in an area with frequent high winds or heavy rains, your best approach will be to choose the style of gutter that best suits that climate. Certain materials will ensure your gutters don’t become weathered or break due to the elements.

Half Round

Half-round gutters are the most traditional and standard style used today. They’re likely what you imagine when you think of gutters. They are shaped like tubes cut in half lengthwise. The half-round design allows them to capture leaves and more without leaking. Half-round gutters don’t require much maintenance, and they can typically be installed seamlessly. If your region experiences a lot of rainfall, half-rounds are an excellent option.

If you live in an older home, half-round gutters will also hold up well and keep your home safe from the effects of too much rain or snow. They are durable and lined to prevent corrosion. They don’t need frequent cleaning as the half-round design helps flush out anything that may be stuck in them. The half-round design also prevents collection overrun.

K-Style

K-style gutters are a less traditional and more modern option for anyone who doesn’t like the look of the more typical gutter styles, such as half-round gutters. The benefit of k-style gutters is that their sides are flat and can be directly attached to your house’s fascia, making installation easier. They also require fewer parts. While they are easier to install and have a more attractive look than traditional half-round gutters, k-style gutters are not always the best option for every home.

If your home is older or more traditional, k-style gutters will not serve you as well as half-round; they lack the kind of weather protection a vintage home is likely to need.

Custom Fascia Gutters

Many modern homeowners choose custom fascia gutters for their ability to blend in with the rest of the home seamlessly. Gutters can protrude from a house at angles that make your architecture’s overall appearance slightly less attractive. Designed to hug the borders of your roof so they still get the job done, fascia gutters blend in and are effectively invisible.

Custom fascia gutters often come with durability benefits, too, as they are usually made from galvanized steel. They won’t rust, nor will they bend or tear away due to heavy rain, high winds, or excessive snowfall. Fascia gutters can also be made from recycled materials, which is a terrific option for anyone concerned with sustainability.

Materials

While the shape of your gutters is important, so are the materials from which they’re manufactured. In certain climates, you may find that some materials will withstand the elements better than others: this is important because you don’t want your gutters to rust or break down due to weather.

Some materials may also be more durable and require less maintenance over time, saving you time and money.

Aluminum

Most gutters you’ll see on traditional homes are made of aluminum. Aluminum has been a popular option for the last several decades and is durable, non-rusting, and affordable. Aluminum gutters can easily be customized (with different colors, for example) to suit the exterior aesthetic of your home. Aluminum gutters are a reliable and easy-to-install option for any home.

Vinyl

Vinyl is already incredibly affordable, and that’s what makes it a popular option for gutters. Vinyl gutters can be finicky, however. They work best in climates that are more temperate, and they are unable to withstand heavy rain and snow. They aren’t ideal for climates that are excessively sunny either. But if your home is located in an area that matches the ideal environment for vinyl gutters, they can be customized to match or coordinate with your home’s aesthetic.

Zinc

Zinc gutters offer a unique benefit. Zinc is incredibly durable and forms a protective seal when exposed to dampness and open air. This quality essentially adds a barrier to your gutters that is weatherproof and resistant to scratches and blemishes. Zinc is also antimicrobial, so mold, mildew, and fungus growth will never be an issue. Zinc gutters are also easily customizable and can be finished in almost any color. Their life expectancy is very long.

Copper

If you’re someone who prioritizes your home’s appearance over functionality, copper gutters may be an attractive option. Copper gutters evolve in appearance the longer you have them, developing an oxidation layer that makes them look even better. If you don’t like the patina that comes with oxidation, it can easily be prevented with regularly scheduled cleaning and maintenance.

Copper is incredibly durable and can withstand all weather conditions with ease. Copper gutters, though, are not available in any other colors.

Steel

Steel gutters are a very affordable option. They are easy to access and install, but they aren’t the most durable gutters available. If you coat them properly, they can withstand the elements and remain rust-free, but even that coating can fail. Steel gutters are also prone to sagging, which can lead to damage if they fall and hit your home. There are ways to make these gutters more durable, but steel gutters aren’t as popular as they once were.

The Benefits of Gutter Guards

If you’re especially concerned about debris and leaves clogging your gutters, investing in gutter guards may be of interest. Especially if your property has a lot of trees, it might be beneficial to get guards, so you don’t have to clean your gutters out as frequently. Gutter guards minimize all issues related to clogging. The lack of clogging reduces the potential for sagging otherwise caused by the added weight of debris and leaves.
